England Hockey shortlist Wapping HC for Notts Sport Club of the Year

In amazing news that sees us happier than our ULO on finally, finally, getting the last flipping umpire assigned for the week, we hear the news from national governing body England Hockey that...

...probably the most chaotic bunch of reprobates ever to be referred to by rival clubs as "a highly professional club focussed on performance" seriously, I mean, have they met us...

...has made the short list for best of the best, the Notts Sport Club of the Year.

Yes really. One look at the pedigree of the rival clubs in this category will help illustrate our palpable excitement: EH Awards article

Messing around aside, this is a testament to the really quite significant efforts from a large number of people this year.

I am particularly pleased with the efforts in both coaching, led by Vice Chair (Performance) Norv & Coaching Development Officer Cleo; youth coaching led by Vice Chair (Community) Sandra Akinbolu and Head of Youth David van Stolk; and in umpiring led by ULO Adam Haines, UDO Alex Riddick; and Marathon Runner without Portfolio Dan Carter, to drive some quite fundamental structural change in this golden Olympic season.

Despite hockey being roughly 50:50 gender participation, it is very common for clubs to have more men's teams than women's, to have men coaching and umpiring women, but not the other way round. We are shifting that dial at Wapping. Some quick stats:

Wapping HC
9 lead coaches, 1/3 female, including women coaching men.
13 assistant coaches being developed. 62% female.
Combining those stats, 50:50 on the gender split for our senior coaches.

Wapping Kidds HC
28 coaches, all volunteers, 61% female.
Many volunteers coming from lower teams unlike senior coach pool.

69 umpires.
Ant Day has now developed to regional level (our first ever).
25% of the Essex umpire panel (below regional) & candidates (i.e. umpires for neutral appts) are Wapping affiliated.
25% becomes 30% when you’re looking at females on the panel for ladies games. And higher still to 40%, when you’re looking at females on the panel for mens games.

+2 ladies, +1 men, taking us to 9 ladies, 11 men.

No men were harmed in the making of these statistics.

There have been other great achievements too. But what better way to celebrate the fantastic success of GB Ladies at the Olympics than to ensure we create an appropriate environment to support all of our players and our workforce.

Thank you for your part in this success.

Pic is a 100% authentic picture of Adam "give me joy in my heart, keep on umpiring" Haines at the moment the umpiring spreadsheet finally turns green each week. Iain McAuslan probably took the pic.
