Tight fight for Wapping L1s

#78

On Saturday 2nd December, Wapping Ladies 1 played West Herts’ Ladies 1s in a closely fought competition.

The first half saw plenty of momentum from Wapping as they effectively transferred back and forth across the pitch, successfully entering the West Herts’ attacking circle. The midfielders of Lotta Paulus, Aisling Mckeon, Lucy Todd and Ciara Murphy connected the play well, quickly linking up the defence and forward line to create some convincing attacking opportunities.

This led to the first goal for Wapping. An accurate strike from Aisling Mckeon was found by Lotta Paulus and deflected into the net of the West Herts’ goal. The well-timed run and superb deflection by Lotta earnt her man of the match later in the day.

In the second half, West Herts really upped the pace, executing an effective high press on Wapping’s backline of Becky Hart, Belinda Armstrong, Dannie Jones, Siobhan Stewart and Hannah Gage.

This made outletting particularly difficult for the Wapping side and quickly West Herts’ capitalised on their opportunities. Whilst their first short corner was effectively saved by goalie Megan Pugh, and the second prevented by Belinda Armstrong’s quick reactions, the third one snuck behind the defenders and found the back board. 1-1.

Wapping did continue to battle through and were able to break down several patterns of attacking play and effectively counter attack. The forward line of Katelynn Roganowicz, Kate O’Sullivan, Jordan Mulvaney, Zara Reid and Vanessa Sharman provided excellent support to the pressured defence line, whilst also stretching the play to help create necessary attacking moments. Unfortunately, no outcomes were to be found for the side, yet not due to a lack of determination and effort.

A disappointing score for the Wapping Ladies 1s, yet the team remains positive to regain their top of the league position. Currently, they sit in second, yet are hopeful to continue on their journey to reach top of the league by demonstrating a strong performance against Old Loughts this Wednesday 6th.
