Wapping M9 v Waltham Forest 4 (a)

"horrific, back stabbing, down-right criminal" by Jon 'J Lo' Lowe

M9 took on bottom of the league Waltham Forest this week, so our hopes were high of getting another three points and cementing our place in the middle of the table. Probably our major downfall was the 10 o’clock push back time, what a ridiculous hour of the morning for a Saturday! The start of the game reflected this as no sooner had the match begun when we decided to pass the ball straight into an empty space and off the pitch, gifting away possession... and what a metaphor for our first half.

It was a slow start to the game for us, not playing well as a team and panicking ourselves, forcing passes in the aim of somehow hoping it would magically result in a goal. The early start had not done us any favours and typically we are slow off the mark, but we finish strongly and as well all now that’s the most important thing!

Will Daniels got us the lead in the first half, but we went into the half time break only the one goal up. We were also hampered in the first half when centre-back Jon Lowe made a typically committed challenge in defence, resulting in a broken thumb and now a one-month lay off. Wise words from the captain and his vice told us to concentrate on our game, play our passing hockey and utilise the back four, and the results would come.

This worked.

We sprung into the second half, kicking it up an extra gear and finding the back of the net on numerous occasions. All six of our second-half goals were scored in similar fashion. Using our pace down the wings to penetrate the D, and if we were getting stuck, not being afraid to pass the ball backwards and re-build.

Will added to his first half goal, and Tom Griffiths also picked up a brace, with Alex Newman, Harry Inch and Matt Wheeler also getting on the score-sheet. Pleasingly, this was our first match of the season in which a single person scored more than one goal in a game.

Waltham Forest scored their goal from a very nicely worked short corner routine that left the defence and keeper standing still. Straight to the top, shifted back to the injector who slipped it home. Something we have committed to memory and will give a go next week.

The only other notable moment of the game was the horrific, back stabbing, down-right criminal attempt at goal stealing from young Jonny Ellis... With the ball about to trickle over the goal-line, Johnny decided to snatch the ball back, flick it left and right a couple of times, then put it over the line. Disgraceful behaviour which rightfully earn't him DOD.

7-1 win for the M9s. MOM went to Ollie Morgan for exceptional (M)organisation and strength at the back.
