Wapping L1s back to winning ways

#78

Motivated by their performance against Surbiton the weekend before and determined to get back to their winning ways, Wapping came onto the pitch ready to move closer to their 78 goal target. The game started strong with Wapping holding most of the possession. The defensive line or Becky Hart, Bea Armstrong, Hannah Gage, Dannie Jones and Siobhan Stewart showed impressive organisation with their solid man to man marking. Their swift transfers around the back and powerful balls down the line and through the St Albans press provided for some strong team attacks in the first half. Unfortunately, the St Albans players continued to put the pressure on, challenging Meg Pugh in goal who continued to clear dangerous balls out of the D. Wapping girls were unable to find the back of the net in the first half though and the game remained 0-0.
After a punchy half time talk from Mesh, the girls came back onto the pitch with a new-found fire in their belly. Securing a short corner in the early minutes of the half, the ball came out to Ais McKeon at the top who disguised the ball to the far post to get a well-timed deflection from Jordan that sent the ball flying into the top of the net, 1-0 to Wapping.
Ash’s “10ft” presence proved to dominate the centre midfield, tiring the St Albans players and creating space for Lotta Paulus and Emma Evans to get the ball and use their skill and quick balls to move the play away from danger.
The forward line of Ness Sharman, Lottie Colquhoun, Jordan Mulvaney, Katelynn Roganoqicz, Ciara Murphy and Zara Reid, piled the pressure on the St Albans defence with a strong attacking press, providing for some side-line steals and quick counter attacks. A strong attacking period was rewarded as Captain Bea fired the ball into the back of the goal from the top right of the D. Unfortunately, skilful play from St Albans saw the girls caught on the break and St Albans’ forwards found the time and space to fire the ball past goalkeeper Meg Pugh, 2-1.
As the St Albans girl’s frustration got the better of them Wapping remained calm. An excellent break out of the Wapping 25 from Katelynn resulted in a calm and perfectly times ball across the oppositions D for Emma to slot into the back of the net. End score, 3-1 to Wapping.
