Ipswich take the win

Wapping v Ipswich Feb 24 2018

Wapping took on top of the table Ipswich this week. The sun was shining and the Wapping ladies were looking to cause an upset to the league leaders. A slow start for both teams made for a frustrating first 15 minutes for Wapping; penetrating the Ipswich ‘D’ continuously only to see all efforts to take the first goal defended. Ipswich’s defenders remained physical and strong splitting Wapping’s forward line.

Wapping played some excellent hockey down the left channel seeing Siobhan, Jordan and Bee Armstrong connect well to side step the Ipswich midfield. High and wide was the tactic, but most of the play was seen in the middle of the pitch. Wapping’s inners Aisling McKeon, Lucy Todd and Emma Evans kept Ipswich’s players from breaking through the lines but Wapping seemed unprepared for the oppositions varied hitting tactics causing the ball to penetrate through the lines.

A quick break allowed an Ipswich to gain control within 25 yards of the Wapping goal; a reverse sweep saw Meg Pugh lobbed. 0-1 Ipswich, half time.

The 2nd half saw a more determined Wapping gaining and keeping possession as much as they could, England’s Becky Hart, Dannie Jones and Hannah Gage kept the momentum flowing, intercepting passes where they could and switching the ball across the pitch beautifully.
Katelynn, Lottie and Token pressured the Ipswich defence as much as possible, closing down players and pinning them against the sideline, but Ipswich always found a way to regain possession. Collisions were plentiful; Jordan Mulvaney's stick accidentally connected with an Ipswich nose which led the player to have to leave the game.

With the game drawing to a close Wapping were desperate to draw level, some amazing crash balls into the ‘D’ just couldn’t connect with the forward 3. Aisling McKeon managed to palm off another card which was eventually given to Jordan Mulvaney for breaking early….at the half way line….during a penalty corner. Another green card handed out to Lottie Colquhoun for a stick challenge upgraded to a yellow on her journey from pitch to dug out to end what was a disappointing and frustrating match.

MOM - Englands Becky Hart, Soibhan and Ais
DOD - Katelynn, for being really Canadian
