Wapping M9 v Upminster M4 (a)

"against the wind of Brian" by Jon 'J Lo' Lowe

Despite Storm Brian’s best attempts to make the game as unappealing as possible, another week of hockey ensued for the M9s who were on the road to Upminster.

The game started with a first for many, as we were playing on a pitch which was uneven, meaning we were uphill in the first half playing against the wind of Brian and looking directly into the sun. Repressing memories of playing Sunday league football, we started extremely strongly, controlling the ball and the pace of the game. This trend continued throughout the whole of the game really, but it was a ruthless first half attacking display that settled the points.

The first goal came from some nice play down the left hand side, working across the midfield, out to the wing where Andy Gill played the ball into Jon Lowe, who in return slipped it under his shoulder to Harry Inch. Inchy had made a great run across the top of the D, lost his man and was able to slot the ball past the goal keeper. This opened the flood gates in all honestly.

Our next four goals were all from short corners, which was a welcome addition to our game. Sustained attacking, running and pressure from the whole midfield and strikers provided chances and the short corners for the goals. Paul Whelan scoring a lovely drag flick direct from the top of the D. Andy Gill followed in suit, lifting the ball past the keepers shoulder and in to the back of the net, after reacting quickest to a saved shot from the Upminster keeper.

Unfortunately this is where I have to be honest and say I don’t remember the exact details of the other goals… but I know that I can say with confidence, and judging from past experience, that both goals scored by Johnny Ellis and Will Daniels must have been emphatic in style with both precision and poise.

With an extremely comfortable lead, skipper Matt Wheeler decided that we should mix up the formation and use the remainder of the game to try new ideas and experiment with different tactics. This didn’t bear fruit on the goals front, but it did provide us with options for the rest of the season and we still maintained control of the game (with the possible exception of the moment Upminster won a P-flick, which was confidently sent against the post).

Man of the Match went to Johnny Ellis for some great running both on and off the ball. DOD went to none other than Andy Gill for… well, after a comfortable performance many of the guys didn’t know who to go for, and Andy is our resident DOD.
Home next weekend against a side we don’t know much about, Rochford 1’s, where we are hoping to keep the winning streak going heading into the Halloween social!
