Wapping M9 v Braintree M2 (h)

"Juggers in the chest" - by Jon 'J Lo' Lowe

Off the back of a fantastic performance against top of the league last week, Wapping M9 were determined to play in the same way but take away all three points this time round, as we took on Braintree at home.

After a slightly delayed PB we started strong into the game, keeping possession of the ball for large portions of the first half. We attacked strongly down the wings, but maybe lacked the composure to keep a hold of the ball and switch from side to side like the week previous. But still, we continued to press, linking together nicely.

Our first goal came from an increasingly reliable source, Andy Gill (I know right!!!). The ball came down the left hand side before being crossed in. Now this is when it skirts the line of being legal, but the ball defiantly flicked up and hit Juggers in the chest, before he took the opportunity to slot the ball home just in front of goal. With no appeals from the opposition the goal was given.

Wapping then had a chance to double their lead in the first half, this time the ball being rocketed in from the right hand side and across the face of the goal. After a 9-week lay off through injury, Alex Newman was eagerly waiting in front of an open goal ready to get his season tally underway... unfortunately his lack of match practice became apparent as the ball was swept past the left hand post.

After a solid defensive performance by Wapping, Braintree's only real opportunities came from penalty corners, and our confidence in attack meant we went into half-time 1-0 up.

Determined to kick on and not make it a close game, and another disappointing draw, we extended our lead following a great play that begun at the back through Tim Alexander, working the way up the field before getting into the D. This time Will Daniels was the man in the right place, wrong-footing the keeper with a great reverse stick stop before slotting the ball into the bottom left. With other engagements to get to in Cornwall, Will decided that with that goal his work was done and headed off.

The three points were then secured as Alex Newman did manage to get himself on the score-sheet, capping off a great return to the team. Perhaps his claims of being leading goalscorer by Christmas for the M9s might come true?

3-0 win and three big points in the bag for the 9s. MOM went to Tim for his solid performance and distribution from the back. DOD went to Newman for his goal line miss, and for also not being available until now... not our fault you fell over and broke your shoulder.
