Wapping M9 v Redbridge & Ilford M2 (a)

"Whelan forgot how to hockey"

For the first game back after the Christmas break, Wapping M9 travelled the short distance to take on Redbridge & Ilford 2s. Whether it was the general over indulgence of the festive season, the fact that it had been over a month since any of us had picked up a stick, or that we were up against a team that we felt after the first round of fixtures were the best opposition we've come up against this season, this was not to be the M9s day.

The game plan was to try and get hold of the ball early on to ease ourselves back into the swing of things. Unfortunately Redbridge had other ideas and came out on the front foot. Their pace in attack looked like a threat from the off and it wasn't long until we found ourselves a goal down.

Going 1-0 down is nothing new for the M9s though, and as the half went on we started to find our feet and earned ourselves a well-worked equaliser. Richard Parsons on his M9 debut won the ball on the left, before squaring it to skipper Matt Wheeler, who had somehow found a fair amount of space in the middle to run forward into. The ball was worked into the D, before the strike-force of Ollie Kean and Jonny Ellis moved it round the keeper for Jonny to tap into an open goal.

For a spell we started to match Redbridge in what was become a faced paced, end-to-end affair. With half-time looming, it was Redbridge who managed to find the goal that would give them the lead.

2-1 going into the second half, we knew we had a chance of getting something from the game but would have to be at our very best. As it turns out, Redbridge were also at their best and started to dominate the game. Two goals either site of a comical five minutes where Paul Whelan completely forgot how to hit a hockey ball (it was less amusing at the time), and we were 4-1 down.

Wapping continued to push for something but to no avail. A short corner on the stroke of full time meant the final score was 5-1 to Redbridge, and deservedly so. Good luck to R&I for the rest of the season!

MOM went to Richard Parsons for an excellent debut, and DOD to Paul Whelan for the above mentioned forgetfulness.
