Wapping M9 v Rochford M1 (a)

"Swan like Nathan"

Wapping travelled out to Rochford with a flat 11, as ski season firmly hit the hockey club. In the reverse fixture, the M9s were soundly beaten 6-1, so knew they were in for a tough game but were looking to prove that they can compete with the top teams in the league.

The first half was an even affair, and going into the break the teams were on level terms at 2-2. Alex Newman claimed both the goals with the second being a particularly highlight. 'Swan like' Nathan Ellisdon, filling in as a makeshift centre-mid, combined with regular CM Harry Inch to lay off to Newman at the top of the D. The defence were fooled by the off the ball run from Ollie Kean, leaving Newman in plenty of space to hammer home, and record possibly his first goal from further out than two yards.

For much of the second half Wapping remained in the contest, until eventually the lack of subs seemed to catch up with the team. Two Rochford goals in the space of 5 minutes gave them a 4-2 win, as Wapping's legs began to tire.

After the drumming of the first fixture, to compete for so long against one of the top teams in the league with just 11 players shows a valiant effort from the boys.

MOM went to David Tearne for a sterling effort at keeping the free-scoring Rochford captain relatively quiet throughout the game. DOD was shared between Jon Lowe, Andy Gill and Matt Wheeler, who all abandoned the team for the slopes.
