Wapping L1s fight to the last seconds

#78

Saturday 4th November brought Wapping Ladies 1s’ greatest challenge of the season to date, in the form of an eager City of Peterborough (COP) 1s side.

Keen to dominate early and secure the home win, Wapping started well with a ten minute period of beautiful flowing hockey from defensive through to attacking lines. After significant maroon possession, COP launched a quick counter attack - with an unmarked player left at back post and the ball whistling off the back line, Wapping suddenly looked slightly rattled. COP maintained a high level of intensity and soon capitalised on winning the ball high up the pitch, dribbling into the D and clinically converting. 1-0 to the travelling team, against the run of play.

Showing great spirit Wapping upped the tempo, drawing on their strong passing game whilst seeking the equaliser. It was Jennifer Allen who displayed her skills to work the ball out of the defensive third and down the line to Vanessa Sharman who made it 1-1.

With everything to play for Wapping dominated, hunting for a goal to take them into the lead. Lucy Todd took a quick sideline ball to send Jordan Mulvaney into the D who swiftly won a penalty corner for Wapping. It was Aisling McKeon who stepped up at top D to fire the ball into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1. It wasn’t long before CoP were on the hunt once more, working the ball into the wide pockets in Wapping’s defensive quarter. A long searching ball into the D brushed a Wapping foot to provide the visitors with a penalty corner. Taking their chances once again, CoP made it 2-2 before the half time whistle.

CoP pushed hard after the break, stretching the game through quick counter attacking play. Within a matter of minutes the visitors won another penalty corner which was neatly slotted home by the injector to make it 3-2. Wapping continued to search for the equaliser, dominating and retaining possession but failing to convert. Once again strong on the break, CoP sent a long ball into the D and managed to win a penalty flick, which was taken confidently. 4-2. Wapping spent the final 15 searching for the goals they desperately needed to remain unbeaten this season. The opportunity eventually came through a penalty corner neatly seen over the line by Lottie Colquhoun. Unfortunately it was too little too late for the home team; the final score remained 4-3.

Man of the match was awarded to Jennifer Allen for her silky 3D skills.

Moose of the match went to Ciara Murphy for popping her Astros in the washing machine an hour before the game.
