Slaying Dragons

Wapping v Norwich Dragons Feb 3rd

Wapping Ladies 1st XI returned to winning ways at Lee Valley on Saturday with a 2-1 win over rivals Norwich Dragons. The result leaves them in third place, just two points behind the leaders Ipswich and on equal points with City of Peterborough, who they will meet in a critical fixture next Saturday.

Wapping started brightly, dominating possession in the opening quarter. Vanessa Sharman looked the most dangerous for the home side, repeatedly breaking behind the Norwich defense. It was no surprise then that Sharman was first on the score sheet, slotting home from short range after pouncing on a stray ball in front of the Norwich goal. Wapping continued to threaten throughout the first half, with Emma Evans and Lucy Todd the key play-makers in the centre of the pitch. They could not, however, find a way around Norwich Dragon’s impressive goal keeper, with the home side leading by one goal at the half time mark.

The second half was a much closer affair. Wapping’s central-defensive duo of Hannah Gage and Dannie Jones were called into action as the Dragons sought to counter attack at pace. Both teams earned a number of penalty corners. With end to end play, indiscipline crept into the game and Wapping were reduced to ten players twice in the second half. Eventually, Aisling McKeon found a way through the Norwich defence, cutting through and shooting from the left of the circle to the inside post. Norwich, however, continued to attack and deftly pulled one back with just two minutes to go. The last minute of the game was frantic, and a cynical Norwich tackle in the dying seconds resulted in both teams being awarded yellow cards after the final whistle. In the end, it was a strong Wapping performance and a return to form after a heavy defeat to Cambridge City seven days earlier.
