Incredible as it seems to be writing this in February, but the summer season is nearly upon us. As usual, we are looking for the finest Wapping members to help us deliver year round hockey. Please send me an email on email@example.com if you'd like to help.
1. City and Wharf Hockey League and Cup
This starts pretty much as soon as our winter season finishes in April. The league runs until July and then in early August we have the small sided tournament & hog roast followed by the Summer End of Season Dinner.
The CAWHL is undoubtedly one of the jewels in Wapping's crown, with opportunities for both 20+1 (or more) corporate teams and 3 Wapping teams to play some fine mixed hockey. The league operates in two halves, with the first half of the league season acting to stream teams into three competitions, so there is hockey to suit all standards. It will also be the first time we've hosted CAWHL since the John Orwell refurbishment, which opens a number of exciting possibilities.
We are looking for highly charismatic members to take one or more of the following positions:
- CAWHL committee - roles will include corresponding with participants, arranging fixtures, umpires, the end of season dinner, press, social media, liaising with the WHC exec, etc. It is a magnificent item for any CV.
- Captains - we expect to need six drawn from both genders. This is a good toe in the water if you're thinking about captaining next year. It being summer though, the emphasis is very much on fun.
- Umpires - there are lots of opportunities here, and it gives a great opportunity for candidate umpires to gain experience on the lower stream, as well as more senior umpires to practice with the national league players and occasional international popping up in the top stream.
Also, please have a think about whether your company could enter - we can top you up with players if you need them! Just emailing the work gym membership list helped me get an excellent group of people together the last couple of years.
2. Back to hockey
It's the finest opportunity in central London for beginners and the rusty to pick up a stick and get involved. This is a real centre-piece for us to drive inclusive participation in the club - we never want to be in a position where we have to run "trials" to see if someone is "good enough to play for us". Everyone is welcome. Running it alongside the CAWHL means the corporate teams have a training home for less experienced members of their companies, allowing us to use the two collectively to drive participation.
Back to hockey is principally about having a fine social environment with gentle coaching back into play. It is entirely volunteer powered, which last season allowed us to offer it for free. There are a number of unpaid assistant coach roles and also the opportunity to just come along and knock a ball around. In particular, it would be great to see some of the previous two years' BTH crew back involved.
3. Single gender league captains
As well as hosting a mixed league, we also enter a number of teams into single gender leagues. There is typically at least one upper and one lower team per gender, and there may be more depending on demand. This is again a high charisma role as as well as working with our existing membership you'll also be one of the first points of contact for our new joiners over the summer, and often the first captain of a BTH joiner. So again, it's all about being fun!
Have I said charisma enough? Well this is next level waking up in a tent with a hangover and a purple mouth charisma! With a club our size we generally participate in a number of tours and to a large part these take care of themselves with groups of friends from the club travelling together.
Although this is great fun for all of us that go, we don't want this to appear like a load of cliques as we're not [deleted] HC, so we're also keen to get a couple of organisers for a tour or two that's open to the full club & emphasises involving our new joiners. Tours are a fantastic way to get to know people outside your core team and part of the glue that holds the club together.
5. International Competitions & national league play offs
As you know we (ok, LVHTC) host various competitions and this summer the highlight is definitely the Champions Trophy. However there are lots of other cool events like the national league play off weekend and so on. You should all have received information on the Champions Trophy from your captains by now.
The idea with this is a bit of organising from the centre allows us to sit together as a big block of fans. Which is generally more fun. The Euros last year were ace, so let's do it again! Someone to do that organising would be v much appreciated.
6. Summer social weekend hockey
We'd love there to be some standing slots, e.g. on a Sat or Sun in summer for "rock up, pay a fiver and play" hockey without too much heavy organising. Think the Americans would call it pick up. This likely at the JO and followed by pub grub. A few volunteers to organise this also appreciated, particularly to gauge demand so we know how much pitch space to book.
Any other summer activities you think we need, just let us know. Volunteers and ideas - please drop me a line firstname.lastname@example.org
