Wapping Hockey Club today announce two new signings to their coaching team. Matt Bowen joins as the new Ladies First Team Head Coach and Warren D'Souza joins as the Men’s First Team Player-Coach.
This season presents a huge opportunity for Wapping Hockey Club to get both First teams promoted to the National League, with the top four in both East Prem Divisions winning promotion.
Wapping Chair Matt Patterson:
“Wapping Hockey Club is really excited to welcome Matt and Warren as our new first team coaches. They both bring with them a wealth of playing and coaching experience that will help us realise our ambition to return to the National League. Combined with the word-class facilities we play on at Lee Valley – home to the recent Women’s Hockey World Cup – I can’t wait to see what this season brings. I’d also like to say a huge thank you to our previous M1 coach, Ryan D’Souza, for his 7 years’ service to the team.”
Matt Bowen, the new Ladies First Team Coach, has played and coached at the highest standards in England, South Africa and Australia, most recently as captain of Canterbury HC in the National League Premier Division.
“I'm very excited to be working with Wapping HC. As a club, they have grown over the years and their ambition is to be playing at a higher level. As a coach it's fantastic to be working with players and management who are all moving towards achieving something great.”
Warren joins on his second stint as Wapping Head Coach, taking over from older brother Ryan. His playing career up to this point has encompassed caps for England at every age group, 4 Premier League champions medals, a Euro Hockey league Bronze medal, and captaining 2 teams in the National League, where he also has coaching experience. Warrens bring indisputable pedigree both on the pitch and in the dugout to Wapping in their quest for National League status.
“I’m delighted to be named as player/coach for Wapping Hockey Club and am looking forward to getting started.
Wapping is a fantastic hockey club. In recent years the club has developed into one of the biggest hockey clubs in the country. The playing membership is huge, the facilities at Lee Valley are second to none and most importantly to me the club has an on-field ambition to be competing at the top of the tree. I’m excited to be part of that ambition and will do what I can to help the club achieve it.”

Wapping Hockey Club would also like to thank Ryan D'Souza, who steps down from the M1 coaching position after 7 years, and our former L1 coach Dave Messham, who has taken a role closer to home to be with his young family.
