“You can’t spell Quarter Final without vowels, and we have all the vowels,” laughed new ladies 1 captain Ciara Murphy, as Ireland became the first country to qualify for the World Cup Quarter Finals, finishing above England.
“I guess Ireland’s coming home then,” was my response. And as matters escalated with reference to “the mainland,” and “Cromwell”, we could have ended up painting roundabouts. But instead, we’ve ended up with a Wapping Irish versus Wapping Rest of the World challenge match on the day of the World Cup final. A ridiculous argument it was (to be sure, to be sure) as I’m not even a Prod, but frankly, with the amount of Irish members we have in this fine club, it is a long overdue challenge match.
So, this will be Sunday, 5 August, at 11am, on the John Orwell pitch, which Ciara tells me is green. I’m sure there will be oranges at half time though.
As Irish Hockey recruits from the 32 County Socialist Confederation of Greater Ireland, Norn Irons will also be invited to play in green. No, you can’t wear a sash. You can qualify on passport (yes Bee), sufficiently complicated name (yes Aisling), or even your grandparents. In accordance with the funding traditions of Irish hockey, you will be expected to provide your own green shirt or borrow one. If that proves challenging, we may help ye. This will be a MIXED match, so all the genders welcome. For don't all of the colours of the rainbow eventually lead ye to the pot of gold?
Non-Irish will play in maroon we expect so “you can at least look like Galway rather than Brits”.
To participate, please email our Wapping LCC
Supporters most definitely welcome, bring flags, hats, or whatever tut you want. Please do feel free to bring non-members, and indeed non-members may even be allowed to play if you contact us in advance.
This match will likely be followed by World Cup final lash in the fan zone for those who don’t have tickets to watch what I am reliably informed will be an Irish v Netherlands final.
So what are you waiting for, get involved! You will, you will, you will...
