Wapping Hockey Club launches L’Ump Month in support of Breast Cancer Care

Posted by Rachel Gaston on 17 September 2018

‘L’Ump Month’, a new initiative from Wapping Hockey Club (WHC), will launch this October to raise money for Breast Cancer Care as part of the charity’s ‘The Big Pink Campaign’. Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, WHC will encourage all club umpires to wear pink when officiating and donate some or all of their match expenses to Breast Cancer Care, as well as championing the cause with all club players and supporters

In addition, WHC will host social events throughout October to raise more money for the campaign, culminating in a themed Halloween social on Saturday 27 October, where teams will dress in their best sports official outfit.

Matt Patterson, Chair at Wapping Hockey Club commented:

“Wapping Hockey Club is proud to be taking part in Breast Cancer Care’s Big Pink. Breast cancer is something that could affect any of us and the work Breast Cancer Care does in providing free care, support and information for people affected by the disease is vital. We’ve already had a great response from our umpires and members and we hope other clubs will join us in raising money for this worthy cause.”

James Holmes, Umpire Liaison Officer at Wapping Hockey Club added:

“Back in February, four of us were umpiring a number of games and we came up with the idea to wear pink shirts in solidarity with those affected by breast cancer. The idea proved popular with other umpires and from there grew to become a month-long event to tie in with Breast Cancer Care’s Big Pink campaign.”

Samia al Qadhi, Chief Executive of Breast Cancer Care, added:

“We’re so grateful to Wapping Hockey Club for taking part in The Big Pink in aid of Breast Cancer Care. All the money raised will enable us to continue to provide vital support to the 62,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year.”

Get everyone together for a Big Pink party this Breast Cancer Awareness Month to support people affected by the most common cancer in the UK.

About Wapping Hockey Club

Founded in 1988 and based in Tower Hamlets in East London, Wapping Hockey Club is one of the UK’s largest field hockey clubs and provides affordable membership fees in the heart of central London. The club is proud to have 11 men’s teams, eight women’s teams as well as dedicated Masters teams. Our Men’s 1st XI play in the East League Premier A Division and the Ladies' 1st X1 in East League Premier Division with all our other men's and ladies teams playing in the East and Essex Leagues. Wapping Hockey Club also has two mixed teams (the Printers and Pirates) for social hockey and provides development opportunities for budding umpires and coaches. In addition, as part of our mission to broaden access to hockey in East London, the club is extremely proud of its 'Wapping Kidds' youth team, dedicated to the development of young hockey players of all ages and ability levels and 'Wapping Flyers', our accessible hockey programme. We train and play throughout the year at our two purpose built hockey facilities - England Hockey’s National Stadium, Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre at the Olympic Park in Stratford and the John Orwell Sports Centre in Wapping (featuring a recently relaid pitch and amazing city skyline views).

About Breast Cancer Care

Breast Cancer Care is the only specialist UK wide charity providing support for women, men, family and friends affected by breast cancer. We’ve been caring for them, supporting them, and campaigning on their behalf since 1973.

Today, we continue to offer a unique range of support including reliable information, one-to-one support over the phone and online from nurses and people who’ve been there. We also offer local group support across the UK.

From the moment someone notices something isn’t right, through to their treatment and beyond, we’re there to help people affected by breast cancer feel more in control. breastcancercare.org.uk

Breast Cancer Care is inviting everyone to gather friends and family for a pink night in, host a bake sale with colleagues or bring the community together for a party in pink on 12 October.

The money you raise will help Breast Cancer Care to provide care, support and information to people with breast cancer.

As little as £30 could give someone the specialist information and support when they need it most through Breast Cancer Care’s Helpline.
