L1 23.03.19

Wapping ladies 1s narrowly missed out on promotion on Saturday 23rd March. Brom and Becks started hard and really came out at the Wapping ladies, despite having already secured the top of league spot. Firing home an early short corner which took an unfortunate bounce off the post Brom and Becks went 1-0 up. This was soon followed by another short corner which Siobhan Stewart gracefully picked off the line and gifted the centre forward. 2-0 Brom and Becks. After this the Wapping girls woke up and, with this been the season of comebacks, we really went after this one. After a passage of delightful play up the pitch, Hannah Gage played in a bobbling ball which Ness Sharman gracefully deflected in to the goal. Half time.

Second half started and the Wapping girls maintained their level. After some hard play from Brom and Becks, they won another short corner. They flicked in their standard left post deflection which flew past the near post defender. 3-1 Brom and Becks. Wapping pulled out some great hockey following this and were really working hard. Wearing Brom and Becks players down, it led to Wapping making great connections with each other. Through a passage of play which started from a transfer on the right side, came left to Lucy Todd, Chelsea Hodgson then overlapped, picked up the ball and played it across to Katelynn  Roganowicz at the top of the D, who took on the keeper 1 on 1 and slotted it away. The last 10 minutes the girls really dug deep and put in a stellar performance but couldn’t quite pull it out of the bag.

And on the men's side

M1 won 5-1, 2 goals for grant, 2 for Ben Bull, 1 for Tom Sibley. POM Ollie bull, DOD tied between Grant, James Bowler and Warren.

Having secured the league title the previous weekend, there were still a few questions to be cleared up as the Wapping 1st team approached their final game of the season. Could they keep the clean sheet required to achieve the best defensive record of the last 10 years, and would Grant Aidoo Nash manage to clinch club top goal scorer?

After a dull first 10 minutes, Wapping forced a short corner and elected for the go to slip. Tom Sibley played his part, sweeping the ball in Grant Aidoo Nash’’s direction which he duly missed leaving the ball to trickle into the far corner, 1-0. The game livened up further as in his determination to wrap up the coveted top goalscorer award, Nash scuffed a few efforts wide. A few minutes later, having rolled a defender in the ‘D’, Ben Bull found himself by the baseline, opting for goal at a tight angle, fortunately his miscued effort found its way to Nash, who duly obliged for his 19th goal of the season. Ben Bull should have added to the lead, after a shocking miss from 5 yards, but shortly thereafter a nice move ended with him finishing well after a first time cross from Nat Crawley.

Early in the second half, good pressing from Jonny Verity, saw him bearing down on goal with just the keeper to beat. Despite trying to run through the keeper, he somehow managed to con the umpire into giving a comical penalty stroke. With captain Cairns in the bin after getting his customary green card, duties were passed to the VC who had the chance to bag his 20th goal of the season. Aidoo-Nash calmy dispatched the penalty into the side netting, 4-0.  Another mazy run from Ben Bull ended with a reverse-stick finish into the bottom corner to make it 5-0. Focus then turned to keeping the clean sheet the team as Letchworth attacked. Unfortunately, Jonny Verity, earned himself a yellow card after running though an unsuspecting Letchworth player. This was compounded as GK Bowler, didn’t have his best moment of the season, letting the ball sneak through his legs to give the Letchworth crowd a cheer.

The game finished 5-1, and was a good way to finish off a great season. Back to the National League Wapping M1 go
