Wapping v Waltham Forest Otters
Hard fought 3 - 1 win to Wapping 9s.
Wapping 9s earned a real hard fought victory against Waltham Forrest Otters (AKA their 5s) on Saturday. It goes to show that we can’t be complacent and that teams really bring their A-game to play on an Olympic pitch. I don’t think we’ve faced a more motivated side (except East London) or one with more subs all season – seriously, they had about six subs.
Mid-way through the first half, Andy White put away two decent “goal-face scrambles” in quick succession to put us in a dominant position and we looked to kick on from there. Unfortunately, the wind was taken out of our sails somewhat when Kevin went down with what looked to be a really serious injury. The initial impression was a broken arm and huge credit to Ryan for looking after him & Sandy for taking him to hospital. It turned out to be a dislocated shoulder, so hopefully we’ll have him back for our big game against Witham on Feb 28th.
After Kevin departed, The Otters really came at us, significantly upping the tempo and scoring just before the break.
We matched their pace in the second half in what’s probably been one of our more aggressive performances to date, which in turn earned each side a green card, Jaap helping himself to his first card of the season. We put the game to bed with a penalty taken by Paddy mid-way through the second half after several short-corners from both sides. New players Nick & Roman both had great games.
MOM was Andy White for his goal scoring antics, DOD was Paddy, apparently for some overly aggressive tackling and penalty hogging.
