Wapping 9 v Redbridge & Ilford Academy
Wapping 9 win a big promotion battle
An understrength Redbridge side arrived for our big promotion battle. With a team of ten, and three declared ringers from much higher teams, it was obvious that all we had to do was keeper the ringers in check and pass the ball around until they tired.
Despite a few notable absences of our own, we quickly scored two goals from Stuart “against the run of play” Nelson. He completed his hat-trick before the end of the first half and we went into the second having defended securely against the handful of quick breaks that they had had. Joey had yet to be troubled in goal.
Shortly into the second half they went a man down and having already scored another, courtesy of Rel, we thought it gentlemanly to give them a player. Matt Wade kindly “volunteered,” sorry Matt! The fact that he was somewhat injured made our selection criteria a little easier. We played much of the second half with ten on ten until their injured player returned and Joey was forced to make a few good saves. Nelson’s goals were all really well taken, two from quick breaks, one from a patient passing build up, the last from a short corner rebound – all four, top of the circle smashes. Rel’s was somewhat of a solo effort as after receiving the ball he still had plenty of work to do. Ed also had a great game up front, frequently troubling them with his movement and runs to the baseline. The other notable performance was from the new father Pinot, an engine in the midfield from one D to the other.
MOM was Nelson for his four goals, bringing his season tally to five? DOD was Matt Wade for playing against us.
