Wapping 9 v Old Southendian 6
Back with a bang
So following two tough defeats to top table opposition with reduced numbers and weakened Wapping sides, this was a nice way to recover. Probably the most emphatically dominant game we’ve had this year, if the score line doesn’t quite reflect it.
Six nil doesn’t do us justice. Our first was a nice short corner routine, planned in the car on the way there, popping the ball back to the pusher - Nelson converted with a nice flick to the net. A somewhat worse for wear Ed Richards (thanks for playing despite being ill) missed a few sitters and hit the post before scoring the hardest chance with a nice tomahawk to get the bandwagon rolling. After that, Old Southendian just sat back and rarely ventured into our half. Nick Summers got his first goal and sealed it off with a hat-trick, Nelson got another and avoided his.
MOM Nick Summers, DOD Nelson. I somehow escaped DOD as I made what I think was my first legitimately dirty tackle on a child. They had broken quickly and most of our defence had enjoyed pushing up the field, I think Toon was racing back but I didn’t want to risk a three on one – that’s my excuse anyway. He continued to give me strange looks for the rest of the game, I couldn’t decide whether it was fear, respect or hatred? Probably hatred.
So, this leaves us pretty close to promotion. All we’ve got to do is match or better Redbridge’s result next weekend – there’s a rugby comparison to be made here but I just can’t think of it…..?
