Wapping M9 v Redbridge & Ilford M2 (h)

"a bit of a blur" - by Jon 'J Lo' Lowe

Playing at home for the first time this season, we turned up with a flat 11 but confident in the players we had. The game was a fast paced affair, with big momentum swings in who was controlling the game. Redbridge and Ilford got off to the better start controlling the first 15 minutes, playing comfortable hockey and moving the ball well. They were rewarded with a goal and a deserved lead. Wapping responded really well. Countering strong against a pressing Redbridge, Nick Summers having a major impact down the left, before squaring the ball to a patiently waiting Harry Inch, slotting it away calmly.
Now this is where I have to be honest and say the rest of the game was a bit of a blur for me. After a great save from Anthony Prigmore, the ball popped up to an opposition player at his shoulder height a yard away from the goal line. He was obviously envisioning scoring a magnificent goal for the cameras, and decided to hammer the ball home as if trying to score a home run for the New York Yankees. What he didn’t see was an idiotic Brummie run across the goal line in an attempt to cover the goal keeper who went forward.
The next thing I remember is lying on the floor with a massive headache. Luckily it wasn’t as bad as it looked and after being checked out by Dr Flynn the game continued.
The second half followed the same pattern as the first. Swinging momentum with Redbridge probably having the better play and the greater press. They once again went ahead, but Wapping were quick to reply. Andy Gill the unlikely hero from the top of the D from a short corner. Picking his spot well and semi-lifting the ball into the bottom corner.
Unfortunately Redbridge once again pulled ahead, now starting to beat us for pace and stamina as they rolled their four substitutes throughout the game. The game finished 3-2 but we put on a good show and had given them a competitive game.
