Wapping M9 v Colchester M3 (h)
"Back at the fortress" by Jon 'J Lo' Lowe
On match day four Wapping 9’s were back at the fortress that it is JO feeling confident that we could get three points which were much needed.
Saying that, Wapping were very slow to start. Colchester capitalised on a groggy start, passing well and crossing the ball across the D and slipping it in at the back post. This provided the spark needed to wake the the home team up. Wapping were playing the better hockey, moving the ball from left to right and putting pressure on the oppositions D. We were rewarded with a few short corners, one of which Nathan Ellisdon stepped up to, slotting the ball away after finally managing to keep one on the floor. The rest of the team were keen to point out that it was the centre backs first goal for Wapping (no Nathan, goals in inter-club friendlies and tour don't count... accept your pint).
The second goal came from the increasingly reliable Ollie Kean, who struck the ball from a tight angle giving us the lead. We continued to play the better hockey up until the end of the half.
In the second half, we were comfortable but without getting the goals to make it an easy lead. Colchester equalised through a short corner which was well struck into the bottom right hand corner, bringing back flashbacks of our other 3-2 games which didn’t go our way. Luckily we kept up the pressure and fought until the end.
J Lo, using a now signature fake slap, slipped the ball to captain Matt Wheeler who created a great bit of space for himself inside the D. He turned nicely before sliding the ball underneath the oncoming goal keeper and into the goal.
The game finished 3-2 and to the relief of all of the 9‘s on the pitch we were eventually on the right side of the scoreline, securing our first three points of the season. But we are determined not to make them the last.
MoM went to the captain himself for his goal and leadership in the game. DoD went to Andy Gill for… well we all know why, it’s Juggers.
