Wapping 2: Bedford 3
Goalscorers: Styles, Aidoo-Nash
Wapping approached their home fixture against Bedford on 1st November 2014 at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre, Olympic Park, in confident mood given their recent run of positive results. The home side made a good start and opened the scoring after 15 minutes, a powerful short corner strike from Felix Styles, converting an opportunity he made for himself.
In the last 10 minutes of the first half, Wapping took their foot off the pedal and relaxed, which proved to be a fatal mistake in Premier A division that does not have any weak teams. Bedford were clinical on the counter attack, scoring three quick fire goals, two at the end of the first half and one within a minute of the second half.
Wapping rallied and dominated the final 25 minutes of the game with a barrage of attacks at the Bedford goal. One goal was clawed back with 15 minutes to go, Grant Aidoo-Nash with a deft finish past the advancing Bedford goalkeeper, who was otherwise in inspired form. In the last 15 minutes Wapping were frustrated by doing everything but score with several goal line clearances and some fine saves from a string of short corners. The final whistle arrived with Wapping devastated at dropping points against very well organised Bedford side with a experienced and powerful forward line.
Captain Oliver Cooper commented: "it's a big lesson for us today that we have to perform for the full 70 minutes in the top division and you can't become overconfident at any stage in a match. We were fantastic for the last 25 minutes but we left ourselves a lot of to do, which we are disappointed about".
Wapping's next fixture sees them take on Cambridge City away on 8th November 2014, a national league club that have shown good form throughout the season and who are coached by ex-Olympian, Nicky Thompson.
