M1 vs Bedford - Phil Messent
4-2 loss sees Wapping drop to 3rd
Wapping 1st XVI came into this Bedford match up high in confidence having been unbeaten since the start of the season and having won their previous three matches against some decent opposition. Following this run of form, Wapping sat top of the East Prem A table going into the clash. That said, there are no easy games in this league and Wapping were fully aware that this nobody was counting their chickens.
Wapping got off to their trademark fast start and the early pressure applied led to a penalty corner that led to a penalty stroke which Micheil Mark swiftly converted to notch his second in as many games.
Following this, the game became more of a scrappy contest which suited the visitors. Whilst Wapping dominated possession around the back, Bedford grabbed an equaliser as their forward slid to shoot home into an open net. Minutes later, Bedford took another goal with a tidy near post finish from the top of the D. With about 25 minutes gone Bedford grabbed a third goal and with good tactical awareness, immediately dropped off to a half court press for the remainder of the half. 3-1 down, Wapping were rattled.
Bedford’s gritty style continued to make life difficult for the home side as they struggled to fashion clear cut opportunities. To compound matters, Bedford managed to sneak in another goal, leaving Wapping with a mountain to climb. Despite being down to 10 men for a good portion of the half, Belgian international Felix Styles converted a sublime penalty corner drag flick to give Wapping hope with 15 minutes to go.
Wapping continued to push but unfortunately could not find an answer to Bedford’s dogged defence, the final score WHC 4 – 2 Bedford.
