A festive result
Following a string of losses and a slide down the league table Wapping 3s needed to stop the rot. Saturday dawned cold and crisp with Wapping out for 3 points against Upminster to kick start the festive season. Illness and holidays meant only 2 recognised defenders were playing and several new faces were called up into a brand new formation!
Undeterred Wapping started sharply, dominating the middle of the pitch and having the best of the early play. A rebound from a short corner was collected by Alex Gray, slipped to Brad Wherry who kept his head to find Rory Twogood on the P-spot for a simple finish. 1-0 Wapping.
More of the same was the message delivered at half time. Wapping pressed hard with the forwards leading strongly and causing no end of trouble for the Upminster defence. A tackle on Hamish Forbes, that wouldn't have looked out of place in the later England - Samoa rugby match, gave Wapping their third short corner. Showing the benefit of Tuesdays training session Brad Wherry, Caspar Paulus and Rory Twogood combined to put Wapping 2-0 up.
With their foot firmly on the pedal Wapping soon won another short corner. Now working like a finely tuned Swiss watch the short corner team converted again, with Hamish Forbes deflecting the ball in at the far post. 3-0 Wapping. Upminster rallied and Wapping had to see out a period of pressure with Chris Monger making some fine saves and Richard Musto turning in a man of the match performance at the unfamiliar position of left back. However Wapping held on to take the 3 points, a clean sheet and start the festive season in style.
Goals: Rory Twogood x 2, Hamish Forbes
Joint MOM: Richard Musto (superb performance out of position of left back) & Rory Twogood (scored two goals)
DOD: Rory Twogood (only scored two goals)
