2-2 draw again
A disappointing game in the rain
Wapping M3s travelled to Southend on a run of 4 straight victories and were keen to extend this against an Old Southendian team that had frustrated them earlier in the season.
The home side were near the bottom of the table, and with Wapping’s squad fairly settled (apart from the notable absence of Brad and Norv) we expected to come away with the points. We knew that the only thing that would stop us would be our own concentration and game…and the freezing estuary rain.
Wapping started with the 3-4-3 formation that had served them so well in recent games, yet the match started in a cagey manner, with both sides struggling to keep hold of the ball up the pitch. The game continued in this manner before Wapping won two short corners in a row, the second one going in thanks to a scrappy finish from Chris Holland.
Southend proved dangerous on their right and managed to pull one back before Wapping flooded the Southendian D on the breakaway, with Kieran Edwards’ reverse shot being saved off the line by an opposition defender only for it to fall to the poaching Chris Holland, who finished well from a tight angle.
The half remained scrappy however, and Southendians managed to string together a couple of decent moves on the breakaway, only to be stopped by the imposing trio of Casper Paulus, James Wheaton and Tom Rose.
Half time 2-1 to Wapping
As the second half progressed Southendians managed to bring themselves into the game more and more, with a number of half chances in our D. The rain had changed from estuary drizzle to full on South Essex torrent and Southendians were increasingly dominating, winning a seemingly endless stream of short corners. Yet Wapping were still dangerous and Oscar Fas did well to get himself 1 on 1 with the keeper, only for his reverse shot to miss the ball entirely.
Wapping were holding on and the points looked to be just about in the bag but Southendians finally put a short corner away with 45 seconds to go in the game.
In truth if Southendians had been more clinical from short corners Wapping could have lost, and overall the squad felt they were lucky to come away with a point. A disappointing game in the rain.
