Fireworks at Old de Ferrerians
Light blue touch paper, step well back...
Wapping men's 6s were looking to extend their unbeaten run with a lunchtime fixture away at Old deFerrians.
This was always a game that could go both ways, de Ferrians were playing 2 leagues higher just a few years ago, and are a very strong side at full strength. Wapping were playing with several first timers for the 6s, so there also unknowns for them...
Wapping started strongly putting pressure on the opposition goal, but after a bright start, deFerrians came back strongly and spent the rest of the first half pressuring the Wapping goal. Only some resolute defending and a number of save's from the keeper kept the scores level at half time.
With the pressure on, it always seemed likely for tensions to flair, and the fireworks started early in the second half. Although in this case it was an assist from Dan Carter and a slick finish from Martin over the opposition keeper that lit the game up. The half progressed with some robust play and a few cases of handbags to keep the umpires busy. Much better play resulted in one of the few Wapping short corners bring well finished by Ian to give them a buffer.
At this stage Wapping captain Ben, put his head on the line for the team, where an aggressive tackle from the de Ferrians number 10 resulting in a clash of heads needing some repairs and taking the captain off the pitch for the rest of the game.
The break appeared not to upset the balance too much and Wapping continued strongly, however there was still a twist in the tail with a shot across the Wapping goal being deflected in by one of their own players.
This left a frantic last few minutes with de Ferrians pushing for the equaliser. However this gave Wapping the chance on the break, their keeper being drawn out by Martin in a 2 on 1, passing the ball to DC who calmly slipped the ball in the net to seal the win.
