Wapping L1s signal their intent

The sun was shining on Lee Valley as Wapping Ladies 1 XI took to the pitch to get their 2017/2018 campaign underway. This week's opposition was an old rival, Old Loughts, who Wapping had met three weeks earlier during preseason, only to be thwarted by the purple-and-whites. Nevertheless, the Wappers were keen set the record straight and to get back on pitch - with Gagey's new see-through skort only adding to the excitement.

Old Loughts kicked off proceedings and were met by an aggressive Wapping response, as the home side piled on the pressure. The Maroons' efforts were rewarded with an early short corner: Captain Bee Armstrong stepped up to the plate, top D strike (was that short corner routine 4? 16? 76(b)? Only Mesh knows): 1-0 Wapping.

Play resumed and Old Loughts settled into the game. They tried to shift the ball down the wings, only to be met with Hannah Gage as she firmly blocked off all attempts to penetrate the Maroon 25. Despite the solid start from Wapping, Loughts began to sneak through the middle rattling the home team's nerves.

Half time. After a customarily inspiring speech from Boss Mesh (lots of Fs and Ds and colouring in those corners), the maroons took to the pitch with renewed vigour. The new look forward line began to connect; a generous pass across the face of the goal from Token to Sully gifted her with a tap in (read: Sully poached Token's goal, sorrynotsorry) - 2-0 Wapping.

With confidence levels high, Wapping came at Old Loughts again. Token, exasperated at having her glory snatched away by her teammate, drilled a deflection off of the keeper's pads to smash the back board. 3-0 Wapping.

The Maroons were on a roll, and next up was the Canadian-star-player-with-the-hardest-name-to-spell, Katelynn Rog-something. She slotted another home, 4-0 to the Wappers.

The best, however, was yet to come. Centre Half Ais McKeon came powering into the D, her first attempt was somewhat lacking (ironically, the massive swing and a miss came from our Irish golfer), but she followed up with a lethal reverse stick strike to bury the ball in the back of the net. Final score: 5-0 Wapping.

It was a great performance by all, but shout out to all the new players for doing a stellar job, and to Becky Hart for having to leg the length of the pitch after Mesh failed to spot their high forward and was yelling at centre-back Becky to "get high". Top coaching, Mesh.

Wolf of the match - the wonderful Gagey, for doing really good hockey.

Moose of the Match - the woeful Gagey, for forgetting her bra (and wearing a see-through skort, although this could have won some Wolf-of-the-match votes too).
