Wapping hangs on to their winning streak

#78

Wapping ladies had the first of their two trips to Cambridge this week, to take on the university team. Although currently bottom of the table, Cambridge are never one to be underestimated, always young and rapidly stronger with each week as the new Uni starters familiarise themselves with the team and recover from fresher’s week…Overall it was another victory for Wapping but not the prettiest one!

Wapping started strong, not allowing Cambridge to hold the ball for very long before a strong tackle or interception denied their game. Setting the pace, Wapping soon found themselves on a strong attack, utilising the loose marking of Cambridge in defence, Jenni Allen was delivered a ball to the penalty spot to sweep it first touch towards the keeper. This was read easily by Cambridge’s goalie who logged for the save, fortunately for Wapping the ball headed straight back to Jen’s stick who then lifted the deflection up and over, into the goal! Continuing the momentum, the maroon team continued their game play, connecting strongly up the right hand side of the pitch with Lottie and Jordon taking it round the defence to once again connect with Jen in front of the keep, a slight angle of the stick allowed the strike into the D once again to lob over the sliding keeper into the back of the net. 2-0 to Wapping ten minutes into play.

With adrenaline high, Wapping remained confident that more goals were to follow but the young Cambridge side started to get into their stride. They quickly got into the game with increasing threats and building play into the winning teams half. Wapping’s defence remained strong with Danni taking centre position this week, continually surrounded by two predatory attackers but still appearing with the ball on the end of her stick having shaken them loose. However, Cambridge soon made their dent in the game, finding themselves on top of the away teams d, with a strong strike, Meg made the save which then found it’s way to a Cambridge stick who then took the opportunity to put the ball away.

A now more confident Cambridge saw a less structured Wapping for the rest of the first half, still with some chances on both sides but equally back and forth. The Wapping ladies on the side line new time was up but the game carried on for a further two minutes with Cambridge penetrating our defence which lead to a nail biting finish to the first half with Danni walking the ball in front of the goal to then release it out of the D. This lead to a massive sigh of relief from most of the team!

The second half continued to as the first half had finished with gameplay yo-yoing to and from both sides. Wapping continued to interrupt some impressive Cambridge play, to then counter attack, with a few more shots flying past the posts. Sully and Jordon using their upmost to connect for the deflections with dives to the ground. C

Unfortunately, Wapping could not capitalise on their numerous shorts to increase the distance between them and the oppo. Cambridge continuing to threaten a goal as the half went on. The final whistle blew to Wapping’s relief. The Ladies first eleven felt grateful for the win but once again disappointment that more goals were not converted and the goal posts left with a post it saying ‘wish you were here’!

MOM – Jennifer Allen for a great sphag bol recipe which contributed to the two goals
DOD – Mesh, for admiring the male runners on the neighbouring track
