Wapping 2's V Harpenden 1's
Written by Georgia Stevens
Fresh off the back of 2 wins and a clean sheet to go with it, Wapping L2s headed to Harpenden hoping to continue their unbeaten streak.Without Coach Musto's inspirational changing room drawings, it fell upon Captain Rachel Haseloff to deliver another rousing changing room speech, pumping her black skirted army full of confidence and composure.
Wapping started nervy, taking the first 10 minutes to iron out the creases and settle into the game. Some glorious link up play between Nat Stewart and Fran Sutton led to Fran opening the scoring.
This settled the Wapping defence and Wapping started to play some of the champagne hockey they're capable of, inspired by their previous home win. Alice Gage and Kate Silbermann controlled the midfield, linking together and feeding pass after pass into the forward line. Rachel Haseloff's relentless skinning of the Harpenden defence gave Fran Sutton the opportunity to get her name on the scoreboard. Lou Song was next to find the back board - not even an overnight transatlantic flight could stop this world champ!
A defensive error led to Harpenden clawing a goal back from a short close to half time, meaning Wapping ended the half 2-1 up. A concise and to the point talk from Captain Hoff was exactly what the team needed, but it took another goal from Harpenden for Wapping to really switch on. After that the defence sharpened up, Georgia Stevens and Mutsa Mutembwa calmly transferred around the back, paying close attention to the direction of birthday girl Mooch between the sticks.
Ruth Tilsley delivered ball after ball of precision passing up the line for Jess Sturgeon and Fran Sutton and Lou Song to pick up. A team goal from Jess/Lou/Nat gave Wapping the lead once more. Ellie Carr making up for what her shoes lacked in completeness with her silky skills. Ellie tied the Harpenden midfield in knots leading to not-quite-Instagram-extraordinaire Kate Silbermann adding her name to the scoresheet, much to the delight of the teams hotly contested number 1 fan - Sippy's mum.
Wapping continued to control the game, Martha Jenkinson executing Coach Musto's right sided attack game plan, effortlessly breezing past player after player. Tash Close gave herself a deserved break from providing a cool and confident head in the back line, venturing up field into the opposition D and closing the game with an absolute cracker into the roof of the net - earning her the coveted L2 MOM hat.
Wapping held strong and finished the game with a 5-2 win, gaining confidence from a shaky start.
Wapping return to the Lee Valley Colosseum next Saturday against Blueharts.
