Wapping 2's V Letchworth 1's
First 3 points of 2018
In typical January fashion match-day was a'not quite frozen' 3 degrees and with a small chance the match may be called off we defiantly defrosted our windshields and packed our thickest skins and headed off to Letchworth.
Waiting for the pitch to defrost gave the L2 plenty of time to enjoy the cosy Letchworth clubhouse with a warm brew. Dr J Ward used this time for exam revision, whilst Mutsa, having just learned about humanism, used the time to research a change of career. Begrudgingly the 2's had to leave the comfort of the clubhouse and venture outside for a warm up. And venture we did, with Sippy taking us on a run practically all the way back to London, but with that, a good stretch and a game of ‘Hoff’ ball we felt prepared for our first match of 2018.
With first push back Wapping started the game in control, transferring around the back and using our midfield to work the ball through to the forwards. Super keeno Wardy was the first to score, within the first 5 minutes no less! The goal came from some concise passing from Sippy at left mid, Hoff picked the ball up in the top left pocket and dribbled the baseline and crossed to a perfectly placed Wardy to slip it into the back of the net. This was due to be the start of something great...
Letchworth didn’t see much of GK Mooch (or their attacking 25!) in the first 15 minutes due to Ellie with her strong tackling and Georgia who would not let the oppo past her, constantly forcing them to retreat and reassemble. Left back Ruth did some fantastic work in defence, channelling their forwards wide and forcing them over the back-line. Skinner who was calm under pressure slotted back into the defence easily, getting the ball out and down the line to the midfield.
Effortless dancing from Jo ‘twinkle toes’ Ward in the oppos D allowed space for Hoff and Jess to drive aggressively at their defence winning short corners. The 2nd goal came from Hoff wiggling around a few defenders to pass to Wardy on the penalty spot to AGAIN slot away like a pro. Midfielders Nat and Alice dazzled the crowd (consisting of one man and his dog and Martha's boyfriend) with their solid marking and distribution of the ball which allowed the forwards to keep pushing towards the goal.
Unfortunately it wasn't all champagne hockey, after such a strong start Wapping soon found themselves under constant pressure and Letchworth were able to find the back of the net bringing them into the game at 2-1. Their goal came from a scrappy short corner after Mooch’s valiant diving to save their first two attempts.
Not to be deterred Wapping regrouped and built up the play to apply more pressure on the hardworking Letchworth defence. Our 3rd goal started all the way from the back with a clearance and line ball up to Wardy, who drove the base line and slipped the ball across for Sippy who sent it past the keeper at a crazy angle. Not content to go into half time at 3-1 Wapping managed to find the net once more with with midfielder Ellie driving through the defence and getting a shot away.
4-1 at half time
The second half started with some great transfers from Mutsa and Martha eliminating the oppos high forwards. Wapping were determined to increase their lead and their goal difference however Letchworth came into the second half reinvigorated and shut down every attempt. A frustrating half for the visitors who continued to work hard without any result. Finally we sealed the deal with one more goal, after a Wapping intercept and the team making a high octane break for it, Sippy pushed the ball elegantly passed the keeper and closed the game out with a 5-1 victory.
Final score 5-1 to Wapping ?? fantastic start to 2018.
