L3 take 3 points away at Braintree

Becky steps up for her first DoD of the season!

This week saw the ladies’ threes travel to the depths of Essex looking to defend their position as leaders of Essex Prem.

Despite our successful run of results this season, we knew that there was still no room for complacency and this game was going to prove another tough contest. Rudeone once again set the tone for day with a professional and focused warm-up, whilst also managing to include a delightful tour of the local highlights culminating in a rather glamourous garden centre car park. With a couple of full-kit w*****s in our midst, we certainly looked the part and everyone could go into the game safe in the knowledge that Rach’s trousers will be back next week, having just about survived the exertion of the warm-up.

Focused and pumped, we started the game strongly, quickly reclaiming the ball from the young Braintree side, and passing the ball around efficiently. The goal we needed evaded us however, despite the mounting number of chances. That was until Sandy, who was making her long-awaited return having taken a few weeks off to master the art of walking (it’s just standing but on the move – who knew!) stepped up at a well won short corner and fired the ball past the Braintree GK, much to Roche’s delight.

We hoped that this would be the breakthrough we needed and we continued to create chances, we thought BJ was sure to make it two but alas that second goal illuded us. A great passage of play finally led up to that second all important goal, with Roche sending the ball beautifully across the D, leaving Babs to do what she does best and tap the ball into the back of the net.

Half time came and after some constructive feedback courtesy of Holtie who had been expertly casting her eye over the proceedings from the sideline and some sugar from sweets which may or may not have been bought from a BP garage on the way, we went back out determined to capitalise on our possession and step it up to our usual standard.

Braintree tested our defence at times with their speed of attack and quick breaks, however we managed to contain the threat, counterattacking well. This led to another short corner, in which the defence once again showed the forwards how it was done and I claimed our third goal (although the celebration may have been a little more than the goal perhaps warranted).

The opposition did not let this faze them however, they continued to attack and eventually a well executed shot found its way to the top corner. At 3-1 we knew we needed to put the game to bed and after a sublime demonstration of champagne hockey, HRH slotting home for our fourth, thankfully having not allowed the football goals to distract her this time…hockey was the real winner there.

It may not have been our prettiest performance to date, but another 3 points on the board means we go into next week’s hotly anticipated showdown against Thurrock still topping the table.

MOM – Roche. it was a tightly fought MOM vote this week, illustrating a good all round team performance but Roche came out on top for some great defending and a brilliant shot at goal/cross to Babs.

DOD – Becky. In an unexpected turn of events and much to Babs’ relief, I unfortunately gifted myself the honour DOD this week for an epic swing and miss in the centre of the pitch (but fear not Babs did of course receive one obligatory vote).
