2 goals apiece for for Holtie & Dad in win against Witham
Driving the baaaaaaaaaaasseline
The match started with a very positive outlook for the Wapping Phoenixes: it was clear from the start that everyone had read captain Roche’s comprehensive email very carefully as everyone arrived on time and BJ even managed to remember her shin pads. All good so far.
We started strong as usual with beautiful control and excellent linking which would have made coach Monger proud, if only he’d been there to watch instead of being busy letting in 5 goals. Unsurprising really to be honest, as during the following match he did ask us who the keeper was, Roche having to explain to him that the keeper is the one wearing the pads and that’s usually what Monger does.
Anyway back to the Phoenixes and their beautiful play... the backs shipping the ball from one side to the other effortlessly, despite missing our impenetrable Gandalf and legendary Krelle.
The first goal was beautifully slotted in by Holtie although the move was probably started by captain Roche ... Jess managed to pick up the ball at pace and releasing it to Holtie who had made a fantastic lead beyond the defenders. 1-0 to the phoenixes!
And so it continued... Skinner and Sandy being calm and collected and Sandy remarkably managing to stay on her feet whilst Roche and Dutchie driving the pace up the wings- yes you read right! Roche made it to the edge of the attacking D!
Bella and Holtie followed in Shalls footsteps and fresh back from Vancouver, performed a few beautifully executed lumberjack moves. Henny and Martha were relentless in the midfield and Princess Marvs didn’t seem weighed down by the enormous rock on her finger and made excellent runs into the D. The second goal was a beautiful deflection by the Phoenix just enough to beat the excellently placed keeper on Princess’s cross- what team work! Then came half time....
Elated by the fantastic performance and roused by Roche’s inspirational speech all we needed was our usual half time sweets to give us a further boost. But wait ... they did not materialise - we looked to Sandra and realised that she hadn’t read Roche’s comprehensive email after all... and so we had to make do without.
The second half started with an excellent tap into the far corner by Holtie off a perfectly executed short corner routine which of course had been called by Roche.
The last goal was another excellent short corner which saw the ball shipped to the left to Dutchie and straight across to the right for the Phoenix to deflect to the top of the net - a great finish and a great cross from Dutchie - this move was also quite possibly started by Roche - actually I’m pretty sure it was.
The game finished at 4-0 for the Wapping Phoenixes with our lovely goalkeeper Chloé not having been tested really - but then again with Roche in defence we wouldn’t expect anything less!
After finding a heap of discarded shirts in the changing rooms, captain Roche realised that actually no one reads her emails and has vowed to send a blank one next week. In fact princess Marvs had read it but was just waiting for her staff to pick them up - she never touches the laundry.
MOM was deservedly awarded to BJ for remembering all of her kit and not letting herself be distracted by rage.
DOD was yet again a set up but now I’m beginning to think it’s out of extreme love rather than racist ageism. I mean how could you not love your dad?
The pint off had to be recorded and re-watched in slow motion as it was so fast that no one could keep up. In fact it was narrowly won by the Phoenix as BJ had expended all her energy running the base line.
Big shout out to Crostyx this week who won against our main competitors for the title Southend. The battle continues!
