Wapping Ladies 4s vs Witham Ladies 1s - 23rd September 2017
No keeper. . . but a promising start to the season.
Final score: 3-2 to Witham.
So, no keeper... ideal. But Wapping L4s keenness and enthusiasm for our first league match could not be dismayed by anything. We trekked it up the A12 to Witham to a nicely resurfaced pitch - praise be! Solley as kicking back had high expectations to live up to after her incredible historical P flick save so spirits were high going into the match. A great first half saw two incredible goals for Wapping and left a Witham side in despair. We looked strong the entire first half and held our positions solidly! Their attackers couldn't get through our solid defence and many chances by our mids and forwards driving up and into the D were only just thwarted by that lovely thing we just didn't have, a keeper...
Half time came and fuelled with vegan Percy pigs, we soldiered on. Sadly at this point, Witham had worked out that battering it through our defence would leave us in a pretty difficult position. With injuries to our team, we carried on with the bare 11. With our fitness being tested in the second half, Witham picked up the pressure and equalised. Then a harsh green card for Wapping left us at 10 women on the pitch against a ever more boisterous Witham side. Witham sneaked through a last goal and sadly the final score line was 3-2 to Witham.
Had Wapping had a goalkeeper, this week would have been a different story! But for a first match of the season Wapping 4's should be very proud of a solid start and great teamwork. Let's hope for lots more of the same play and god help Witham when they play us at home with a keeper!
