Wapping 6 V Braintree 2
Sometimes we don't win....
Some people measure the success of a hockey game by the scoreline. This week, the Super 6s are doing things differently [Read: we lost].
As a depleted L6s squad arrived at JO [ahem: Karen, Sinead] on a bleak and wet Saturday morning spirits were instantly lifted by the news that we would be joined by Dutchie and Baby Monty!
Things started well. L6 winning the toss to take first push-back. Almost immediately Braintree adopted some solid man-marking making it clear that we would have a good game on our hands and our forwards wouldn't be lonely.
Some runs from Lauren [our MoM], striding past the oppo with ease, helped to get some early shots on goal [score: 0-0]. As we passed the ball out to the right, Fi shot down the wing like a juggernaut putting some superb crosses into the P-spot [Score: 0-0]. A prolonged period of attack was mopped up by some tidy Braintree defending, putting our forwards under a bit of pressure.
A Braintree hit-out sped like a bullet through the weary legs of the forwards and mids, finding a Braintree forward lurking in our 25. Carla went down, saving the first shot, then the rebound, then the second rebound, but Braintree managed to sneak in the third [Score: 0-1].
Some great distribution round the back between Anna, Lucia, Jay and Dutchie helped to resume our phases of attacking play, with Simes swooping onto the ball making ground with well-placed passes to our forwards and wings; some of which we got on the end of; some of them we missed, instead taking a slippery surface at JO as an excuse for some practice for our ice-skating social [a particularly nice display from our DoD Lauren]. Back on our feet, we started to use the left, with balls going out to Marieke then being fired in at the Braintree GK [Score: 0-1].
Dominating our defensive half and denying any further Braintree attack Dutchie placed some beautiful passes to the wings. We had some classy phases of play where our hungry centre forward Ema was waiting to pounce [Score: 0-1]. There was some great linking play between Sticky Bee and Ema eventually being rewarded with a penalty corner [Score: 0-1].
As the clock-ticked down, a last surge of energy led to Sticky Bee having some cracking shots at goal [Score 0-1].
Some great play from the super 6s, bring on a win next week!
